Known as Father Smolich, Tom was a Jesuit priest at the Dolores Mission in East Los Angeles, was featured in the 1989-10-09 issue of People magazine as "The Jeopardy! Priest".

Tom was invited back to appear on the show after his first loss when viewers wrote in to point out that one of his opponents had been credited for a response that wasn't quite correct.
