Along with Mattea Roach and Amy Schneider, Matt was one of three superchampions to be granted a bye into the semifinals of the 2022 Tournament of Champions.

At the time of his original appearance, Matt was a fifth-year computer-science doctoral student at Yale University, but since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, he had been doing his academic work remotely from home in Medina, Ohio. Matt was the 2009 Medina High School valedictorian, and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in actuarial math.
