An orthopedic surgeon from Lake Oswego, Oregon...

Tom Toal

Hey Portland, I'm Tom Toal from Lake Oswego. Step out of the rain and watch me on Jeopardy!

[2011-01-12 Winner's Circle interview]
How does it feel to be the new Jeopardy! champion?
I'll tell you. I'm a Jeopardy! champion, I'd like someone to go out and get me a little drink--bottle of scotch or something--just to get the nerves calmed down a little bit if you don't mind! [Cut] It's fantastic. This is all I wanted from today. I've had a lifelong dream of being on Jeopardy!, and uh, it was actually more than that--I had to win one game. And, uh, now that that's done, I can relax and get into the flow and have a little fun with it.

How did you prepare for your appearance on Jeopardy!?
Three weeks ago I got the call and I went out and purchased a bunch of reference books and have been sittin' down in the evening and looking--looking through those and trying to memorize the capitals of the fifty states. [Cut] There's a lot of things that came up. The Turn of the Screw. I've never read--perhaps I've never heard of it before, and that was a $2,000 question. That was a good--that was a worthwhile effort.

Do you have any goals as a Jeopardy! champion?
Let's win another one.

Season 27 1-time champion: $12,200 + $1,000.

Last name pronounced like "TOLL".
