An investment analyst from San Diego, California...

John Cuthbertson

Date of first appearance:
November 1993

Total winnings:
$82,300 for 1993 regular season, $5,000 for reaching semifinals of 1994 Tournament of Champions. [J! Archive note: in his ToC introduction, Cuthbertson was reported to have won $82,400.]

Records held/Stats:
At the time of my appearance, I was #9 on the all-time list of top money winners in regular shows. (Also, my friend Howard Roth says that the Tournament game that I won by $1 was the most exciting game of Jeopardy! he's ever seen.)

Favorite anecdote associated with being on the show:
I work as an investment analyst at a firm serving institutional investors. Marketing people at my firm have often mentioned to prospective clients that I was a Jeopardy! Champion. This seems to generate much more interest than talking about my Princeton Ph.D.!

Did being on Jeopardy! have any effect on your life?
Definitely! The money from the show enabled us to buy a house in San Diego, which has turned out to be a fantastic investment. Also, having a little money to invest myself helped spark an interest in the investment field that eventually led me to a career change from physics to finance. My appearance also launched my “show biz career,” with subsequent appearances on Win Ben Stein's Money and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Anything else?
My daughter Victoria likes to watch the tape of the Tournament show where Alex asks me in the interview whether we had any names picked out for the baby that my wife was then expecting.
