Michael Steele is an American politician and MSNBC political analyst. He was the first African American to serve as chairman of the Republican National Committee, from 2009-11. From 2003-07, he was the seventh lieutenant governor of Maryland and the first African American elected to statewide office in the state. During his time as lieutenant governor, he chaired the Minority Business Enterprise task force, actively promoting an expansion of affirmative action in the corporate world.
