A technical products specialist originally from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada...

Robert Slaven

Date of first appearance:
March 1992

Total winnings:
$63,202 ($53,202 in five wins, $5,000 semi-finalist 1992 ToC, $5,000 1993 10th Anniversary Tournament)

Records held/Stats:
5-time champ. Only two losses to two of the all-time record holders (before Ken): Frank Spangenberg and Jerome Vered. I also suspect I'm the northernmost 5-time champ.

Favorite anecdote associated with being on the show:
The summer after my appearances, a colleague at work told me to come across the street to the coffee shop. He'd met a retired couple from Florida who'd brought their RV up to Yellowknife. They said they decided on somewhere different to go every summer in their RV, and after seeing my appearance on the show they looked up Yellowknife and decided to go there. They happened to get chatting with my friend in the coffee shop, and they were very pleasantly surprised when he said "Hey, he's right across the street; wanna meet him?" They were very excited.

Did being on Jeopardy! have any effect on your life?
I was able to pay off some debt that was making me hesitant to propose to my now-wife, so that was a pretty big effect; we've now been married for almost 13 years and have four wonderful daughters. And I was elected to a 3-year term on Yellowknife City Council in 1997; the name recognition from being on Jeopardy! certainly didn't hurt!

Did you do anything crazy with your winnings?
Aside from paying bills and getting a very nice engagement ring for Linn-Marie, I did buy a snowmobile. I used it to commute to work for the rest of my time in Yellowknife.

Is there anything else you would like viewers to know about you?
I'm not much different than when I was on the show 13 years ago; a little hairier, a little chunkier, with a beautiful wife, and a herd of beautiful daughters. I'm playing trombone in a local funk-pop band, I've got a great job with a major software firm downtown, and I'm absolutely thrilled to have the chance to compete again on Jeopardy!
