Richard was the Treasurer of Franklin County, Ohio before being elected to Treasurer of the State of Ohio on 2006-11-07. His official campaign biography mentioned his Jeopardy! wins, and he held a Jeopardy!-themed fundraiser in Cleveland on 2006-11-02.
On 2008-11-04, Richard was elected Ohio Attorney General. His official campaign site can be found at cordrayforohio.com.
On 2011-07-17, President Obama nominated Richard to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and installed Richard to that post by recess appointment on 2012-01-04. Richard was confirmed to the post by the U.S. Senate on 2013-07-16. He resigned in 2017 to run for governor of Ohio.
In 2021, Cordray became chief operating officer of Federal Student Aid in the U.S. Department of Education.
